Story: Walking through the crunching leaves as the wind brushed through my mane, I looked up into the tall trees of the mighty forest. The redwoods stood firm as the breeze increased to a strong wind. Thinking about how the redwoods have seen wildfires rip through this very terrain that I ever so carefully walk through today. The rebirth of the forest after devastation marvels me. These days I hardly get any alone time after being transferred ranches to live with my wonderful mate, Zara. It is a dream being able to see her everyday, but the lack of alone time and independence is frustrating at times. For so long we had been long distance and it was difficult at times. But she was worth it. Falling in love at a horse show was completely unexpected and the last place I expected to find love. Competitiveness surges through places like that and often taints the eyes. A loud crack snapped under my hooves, shocking my thoughts back into reality rather than reminisce. The birds woke up with the sound of the snap and anxiously scattered from their homes at the thought of a possible threat. I jumped in shock, but looked down only to see a broken branch underneath me. I sighed in relief as my heart rate began to slow down and my anxieties began to retreat back into the crevices of my mind. As I continued through the lush forest that was slowly becoming barren, I heard the rushing and raging waters of the river approach my senses. Mist from the surging waters brushed against my coat and coated my fur. Shivers rushed down my spine and the cold seeped into my soul. These areas were unfamiliar to me but I had heard from others that there was a sweet fruit tree nearby that only a few know about. Apparently the fruit tree was along the banks of the river and was easy to overlook. I scoured both sides of the river and continued to slowly walk alongside its strong currents. The waters splashed up against the worn down rocks that had lost their edges from the neverending pounding waves throughout the years. I ventured deeper into the forest and still walked along the long river. A short, yet full tree caught my eyes and I spotted fruits hanging from its gentle branches. I had to find a place to cross to see if this was the illusive fruit tree. Eventually, the river led to a shallow section where the waters were calm and ideal for crossing. I gently stepped into the piercing cold waters and jumped back out in shock of the coldness. I am very intolerant to cold temperatures and can't stand being soggy and freezing. I began to ration whether or not a stupid fruit that may or may not be the illusive fruit was worth the cold water and drenched fur. I jumped back into the water and my body began to tense up. My muscles became tight and the water seemed to only get colder as I slowly walked across the river. The other side seemed so far and all I wanted was a warm blanket. The mud of the riverbanks coated my legs as I stepped out of the cold water. I quickly walked over to the tree with the prized fruit and plucked a fruit from its branches. I placed it on the ground and took a huge bite out of it. The sweet juices filled my mouth and it was worth crossing the cold waters for.
