Story: Things had changed quite a bit since my son, Rocco was born. From needing to set better examples for him instead of breaking out of my stall to having to teach him the Christmas holiday traditions. Down in the foothills at the base of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, snow is something that we rarely experience. On a rare occasion, we experience hail and up to two inches of snow once in a great blue moon. As I peeked out of my stall with Rocco standing beside me, the cold, crisp winter air rushed in and filled up my lungs. I looked down and smiled at Rocco as curiosity filled his eyes. He looked up at me and said "Mama, what are our traditions? Everyone has them and I think I am old enough to know and help." He puffed up his chest and looked all serious. I smiled and laughed. Then I said with a smile on my face, "Rocco, some of the traditions you're too young for, like pulling the sleighs. But I do think there is one tradition you would be excellent for." His eyes grew double in size with excitement and a massive smile spilled across his face. He said "Really Mama? What is it? You have to tell me now!" I looked out the window and said "Alright alright. I guess I will tell you since your curiosity is eating you alive. When the foals and colts are too weak and young to pull the sleighs for our annual sleigh rides, we have them pull small sleds alongside where the ranch dogs can ride alongside and enjoy the winter festivities. This year, I volunteered you to pull one of the favorite ranch dogs, Charlie. Charlie is one of the sweetest dogs on this ranch and is quite patient. He will be a great fit for you." Rocco looked slightly disappointed with his task. "What's the matter Rocco? I thought you'd be excited to be participating in our sleigh and sled rides. Once you grow bigger and are older, you can pull the sleighs alongside me." His face looked perplexed and deep in thought. He walked out of our stall and I let him go by himself. I watched him from my stall and saw him go up to Charlie. The two began to play in the cool fog. Soon, the two came back to me, breathing hard from all of their running and playing. Rocco said "Mama, you will not believe what Charlie told me. We get to be at the front of the dog sleds. I can't wait to be the leader. It is going be so cool. Charlie and I get to wear matching stuff and look super cool. I am so excited!" A smile broke out across his face and Charlie looked at me with eagerness and happiness. I looked down at them both and said "Well I am glad that you are participating rather than being a grumpy old Scrooge. More than anything, the holidays are meant to bring everyone together and celebrate our friendships."
